The AfterShokz brand is known for creating bone conduction headphones that would change the way you listen to music, podcasts, and take calls, in particular for those who have to be aware of their environment in addition to those with hearing impairments who miss listening to music.
Our research team tested the Aftershokz Aeropex in a wide range of scenarios to determine how these headphones compare to traditional wireless earbuds or headphones.
Let’s get into the Aftershokz Aeropex Review.
What Is The Targeted Audience Of Aftershokz Aeropex Headphones?
|Ear Placement||Open Ear|
|Item Weight||1.06 ounces|
|Product Dimensions||5.31 x 3.69 x 6.65 inches|
The targeted audience of these headphones is athletes and fitness persons. Regardless of how loud the music is, regardless of what is going on around you, such as pedestrians, traffic, or the semi-trailer backing up in front of you, you can still hear everything going on around you.
Basically, these headphones resemble the look of a headband that wraps around the back of your head and rests lightly over your ears and cheekbones so that sound has a direct path to your inner ear without having to pass through your ear canal. As long as you don’t cover your ear canals, you can hear what’s happening around you, but the sound quality isn’t very high.
Design And Comfort Of Aftershokz Aeropex
It looks more like earbuds than a headband that goes behind the ears. There are fewer pressure points since the earbuds do not touch the back of the neck. In spite of their weight being 30g, they have some limitations in terms of which they can be fitted. If you have a smaller head (Mini), Aftershokz also offers pairs, so you may have to measure your head using their recommendation before purchasing a pair.
Due to a slight tension between the headphones and your cheekbones, we could not comfortably wear the headphones for longer than a few hours. This slight tension only grows stronger over time, making wearing the headphones uncomfortable.
In my opinion, this is not a problem if you use the headphones for a short period of time, but if you use them as a headset for work constantly, it can become irritating over time. As of right now, there is a headset from AfterShokz that is designed for desk work (Opencomm).
Wearing headphones can be a problem when wearing a helmet. However, these headphones sit low enough on the back of the head that they do not present an issue. For runners, the cheekbones are properly pressured during jogging, so they do not slip out of rhythm. You might find it uncomfortable with a beanie if it’s cold outside.
Sound Quality Of Aftershokz Aeropex
AfterShokz Aeropex headphones are, to be honest, pretty disappointing as far as sound quality is concerned. Compared to other wireless earbuds, the sound quality of these headphones is very tiny, and the bass is low, so I would not recommend them as a good alternative for listening to music.
In contexts where you need to remain aware of your surroundings – such as when exercising or simply walking – you will notice the constant flow of sound will make you want to increase the volume to drown it out, which you do not want. Although these are bone conduction headphones and earbuds, listening to the volume for too long at a high volume will still damage your hearing.
Cycling, on the other hand, did seem to be more enjoyable. The wind tunnel effect is a common side effect that can occur from wearing earbuds because you hear the wind blowing around you and drowning out all the sounds in your ear. However, the AfterShokz headphones do not fully eradicate this problem, but they significantly reduce it and allow you to keep track of traffic around you.
AfterShokz headphones or earbuds perform about as well on phone calls as other earphones or earbuds. However, this might decrease when you listen to music followed by podcasts and audiobooks and are in an environment with a lot of background noise.
Aftershokz Aeropex Controls
There are controls on both the left and right earpieces. Depending on the app you are using on your phone, you can skip tracks back and forth, pause music, answer calls, and activate voice control using the left earpiece.
You can adjust volume, power and activate Bluetooth with the right earpiece. If you practice a little, the headphones will not be difficult to use. It is important that the pressure necessary to activate the controls is firm enough to prevent accidental activation but is not so painful that it would be uncomfortable.
Battery Backup And Connectivity Of Aftershokz Aeropex
There is no way you will play music or take calls on these headphones for as long as you might be able to with other headphones due to their lightweight. When it comes to lithium batteries, the average run time is likely to be eight hours, but it may gradually diminish over time.
The AfterShokz charging cords come in two pieces to keep, one at your workplace and one at home. The charging process takes about two hours. The charger is magnetized, which provides a convenient way of charging the device.
These days, there is no shortage of Bluetooth headphones, and there are many of them advertised to have version 5.0. They come with a range of 10 meters without obstruction, but the range will decrease if you’re in a building with obstructions.

Why Should You Buy Aftershokz Aeropex?
Listening to music with these headphones can be a positive experience for hearing loss, but only as long as their hearing aids are placed inside the ear.
These headphones cost about $130, which isn’t cheap but is comparable to other high-end workout headphones.
It is suggested that you use these headphones if you are an athlete who needs headphones that fit properly, are waterproof, work efficiently, and provide you with a wide range of hearing awareness.
Why Should You Avoid Aftershokz Aeropex?
You may find that the headband touches the back of your neck and moves the head a little if you tend to look up a lot while wearing it.
When it comes to the fit, it is very stable, and it can be used to sprint or lift weights with no problem at all.
Despite their advantages, they are not suitable for weightlifters. Because the headband wraps around the back of the head, you will not be able to rest your head while bench pressing.
Furthermore, if your head is extra small, you may find the headband a bit loose.
Overall, if you are looking for solid quality bone conduction headphones with a decent battery back and fast charging as well as with a comfortable and waterproof design, you should not skip these headphones. You can skip these headphones if you are a music lover and conscious about bass and sound. Although for calling and audiobooks, these are the best bone conduction headphones.
